Didi Hamann names Liverpool ‘option’ who could take over from Virgil van Dijk

Didi Hamann has named an outside Liverpool bet who could take over from Virgil van Dijk as club captain when the Dutchman departs — which ideally won’t be in 2025.

When Virgil van Dijk leaves Liverpool, the Reds won’t only need to replace the best center-back in the world. They will also need to name a new club captain — though no one at Anfield, despite his contract situation, should want that to come in 2025.

As it stands, Van Dijk will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. There is, though, plenty of time to agree an extension with the 32-year-old, who was signed from Southampton almost seven years ago.

In the case of Van Dijk going — and he will eventually, even if it isn’t next year — former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann has an idea of who could replace him as skipper. The German has put Curtis Jones forward as an option.

I think Van Dijk will definitely stay at Liverpool,” Hamann told Boyle Sports while talking about Premier League betting. “He is the captain and arguably the best defender in the league, but if he does go, I think Jones could be a nice option as captain.

He’s having a cracking season and is also a Scouse boy. However, having said that, I always like my captain to be a defender or a central midfielder. He’s an attacking midfielder and his form could come and go. He’s an option, but maybe not my first one.”

Liverpool.com says: Jones should absolutely be an option though Liverpool would ideally postpone the decision over who should replace Van Dijk in the role for as long as possible. Losing him before the end of his career and seeing him play elsewhere — because there would be a long line of takers would be a nightmare for Reds fans.
