Zubimeni has been linked with a move to Liverpool since the summer
It is no secret that Liverpool FC were interested in signing a midfielder this summer, with Martin Zubimendi among the potential candidates.
The Spanish midfielder seemed like a natural fit for the Reds due to his composure and intelligence on the ball.
However, despite widespread reports of Liverpool’s interest, a deal for Zubimendi never materialised.
The midfielder has continued to attract significant interest across Europe this season, with Manchester City also said to be keen on him as they look to bolster their squad following the season-long injury of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri.
Football journalist Fabrizio Romano recently revealed on Twitter, quoting an interview from Estadio Deportivo, that Zubimendi does indeed have a release clause in his contract, and should any club trigger this clause, a move could be possible.
However, despite the presence of a release clause, any decision regarding a potential transfer would ultimately be up to the player himself.
According to Estadio Deportivo, Roberto Olabe, Real Sociedad’s director said, “There is little peace about the clauses, but in all this time Martín himself has shown us that above the clauses are the wills.”
“Until today we have already seen the behavior that he has had, I do not foresee that we will have any scares in January.”
Zubimendi has been a regular in the Real Sociedad lineup, featuring in 17 of the club’s 18 La Liga fixtures so far this season.
Earlier this week, the midfielder revealed that rumours of a move to Liverpool in the summer had caught him by surprise, as he had not planned on leaving Real Sociedad.
Ultimately, Zubimendi decided to stay, recognising the importance of the current season for both the club and himself.
Speaking to El Diario Vasco, Zubimendi said, “I stayed because I knew this season would be important for me in the team, and I still had steps to take. It wasn’t that hard of a decision,” he said.
