### **Notre Dame Names CJ Carr Starting QB for 2025 Season, Kenny Minchey to Serve as Backup**
**SOUTH BEND, Ind. —** In a decision that signals the future of the Fighting Irish offense, first-year head coach Marcus Freeman has named redshirt freshman CJ Carr the starting quarterback for the 2025 season. The announcement, made official on Saturday following the team’s final fall scrimmage, ends a closely watched offseason competition with junior Kenny Minchey.
Carr, a highly-touted prospect and the grandson of former Michigan coaching legend Lloyd Carr, has impressed the coaching staff since arriving on campus with his advanced pocket presence, arm talent, and command of offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock’s system.

The decision means Kenny Minchey, who served as the primary backup to Sam Hartman in 2023 and saw spot duty last season, will resume his role as the second-string quarterback. Freeman was quick to praise Minchey’s maturity and team-first attitude.
