Seeking further development, Sears transferred to Hargrave Military Academy for his senior year, where he averaged 14 points, three assists, and five rebounds per game, aiding the team in reaching the Final Four of the National Prep Championship.

Sears commenced his collegiate career at Ohio University. As a freshman, he averaged 8.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, earning a spot on the MAC All-Freshman Team. With the departure of starting point guard Jason Preston, Sears stepped into a leading role in his sophomore year, delivering impressive averages of 19.6 points, six rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game, which earned him First Team All-MAC honors.

In April 2022, Sears transferred to the University of Alabama. In his initial season with the Crimson Tide, he averaged 12.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, securing a place on the Second Team All-SEC.
