Cowboys’ $80 million star had no clue Mike McCarthy isn’t an NFL head coach anymore

Even though all signs and comments from ownership pointed to the Dallas Cowboys keeping Mike McCarthy, they decided not to agree to a new contract with their head coach of the past five seasons.

That happened back on January 13. The Cowboys promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach on January 24.

Then, on February 11, the New Orleans Saints hired Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to be their head coach, filling the final NFL head coaching vacancy of the offseason. This meant that McCarthy, after leading the Cowboys to a 49-35 record across five seasons, wouldn’t be an NFL head coach for the 2025 season.

Yet, when recent Cowboys defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa appeared on the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams, he was completely clueless to the fact that McCarthy was no longer an NFL head coach.

Adams asked, “Are you surprised coach McCarthy doesn’t have a head coaching gig this year?”

Odighizu replied, “Umm, I didn’t even know that he didn’t. But um, a little bit. But at the same time, not really. There’s only 32 spots. There’s not always going to be something that just pops up open. It’s an unpredictable beast, the NFL so.”

Later, Odighizuwa replied on X, saying, “In my defense I had something I had to get done,” referring to his recent four-year, $80 million contract extension to remain with the Cowboys.
