Following the Texas Longhorns’ 79-72 victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores in the first round of the SEC Tournament, head coach Rodney Terry and freshman guard Tre Johnson addressed the media to share their thoughts on the game and the team’s outlook for the postseason.

On bouncing back after a challenging performance against Oklahoma:
“It was just me thinking about the next game, not dwelling too much on the 0-for-14 performance. I focused on figuring out different ways to help my team win, even if I’m not scoring.”
On playing under the observation of NBA scouts:
“I don’t feel like it changed my game. I’m still going to do whatever the team needs me to do to win. It’s more about not thinking about the next level, just focusing on what we need to win the next game.”
On the significance of representing Texas:
“It means a lot to have Texas on the front of my jersey. It gives you something to play for because you hear about all the greats that came before you. So, just going out, playing as hard as I can, as hard as my team can, and trying to get a win to represent those who came before us.”

On preparing the team for postseason play:
“I’ve been saying this for the last week and a half or so—you’ve got to get lost in the moment right now. It’s about every possession. As a college basketball player, how can you not be excited about the month of March? That’s when memories are made; it’s like Christmas—it’s the most wonderful time of the year.”
On the return of Chendall Weaver:
“We really missed that guy throughout the course of SEC play. He’s one of those players whose energy is contagious when he comes into the game. He makes everyone else play harder. He’s probably one of our toughest guys on the team and consistently makes winning plays.”
On monitoring the NCAA Tournament bubble:
“I try to keep these guys focused on the moment but also provide them with the big picture. For us, every game is a big game. There’s no pressure if you’re prepared. My staff does a great job of preparing the guys for every game, so there’s no pressure. You go out, play, and execute.”
On the team’s goals moving forward:
“We never shy away from the expectations and standards of winning at Texas. Our goal all season long has been to win the conference championship and get into the postseason. March is all about finishing and dancing. If you can finish your possession, finish a half, finish a game, you have a chance to advance in March.”
