Interviewer: Cooper, first off, congratulations on committing to Duke! It’s an exciting time for you, but also for the program. What made you decide that Duke was the right place for you?
Cooper Flagg: Thank you, it’s definitely an exciting time. Honestly, it just felt like the right fit. From the moment I visited, I could feel the tradition and the level of commitment there. Duke isn’t just about winning basketball games—it’s about building something bigger than that. The culture, the coaching staff, and the players all have this shared mentality of striving for greatness. I want to be part of that. I want to leave a legacy, not just for myself but for the program.
Interviewer: That’s great to hear! You mentioned building a legacy. How do you see yourself fitting into the history of a program like Duke, which has produced so many NBA legends?
Cooper Flagg: It’s humbling, honestly. Duke has such a rich history, and so many great players have come through there, from Zion [Williamson] to Jason [Tatum] and beyond. But I’m not focused on being compared to anyone else. I want to create my own path, my own legacy. I want to contribute to the team’s success, help bring home a national title, and hopefully set a standard for the next group of players who come through.
Interviewer: That’s a really admirable mindset. You’ve talked about contributing to the team’s success, but what do you feel you can bring to the table as a player? What are your strengths that will help elevate the team?
Cooper Flagg: I think my versatility is one of my biggest strengths. I can impact the game on both ends of the floor. Defensively, I try to be a disruptor—whether it’s blocking shots, getting steals, or just being in the right position. Offensively, I love to make plays, whether that’s scoring or setting up my teammates. I think I can also bring leadership and energy to the team. Duke is a program full of high-level players, but I think having someone who leads by example, with a focus on hard work and dedication, can help push the team to even greater heights.
Interviewer: Your defensive prowess definitely stands out, especially considering how well Duke has historically valued strong defense. How do you see yourself fitting into Coach Scheyer’s system, and what excites you most about playing for him?
Cooper Flagg: Coach Scheyer’s system is one that really excites me. He’s all about playing with intensity, being selfless on both ends of the floor, and making sure everyone is contributing. That’s something I really respect and want to be a part of. I love how he pushes his players to maximize their potential, both as individuals and as a team. I’m really excited to be coached by him and to work alongside a staff that has such a deep understanding of the game. I think my defensive mindset will fit perfectly into the way Duke likes to play, and I’m eager to contribute to that level of intensity.
Interviewer: It sounds like you’re ready to dive right into the intensity of it all! Beyond the basketball aspect, what are you most looking forward to in your college experience at Duke?
Cooper Flagg: Honestly, I’m looking forward to the entire experience—getting to be part of such a historic program, playing in front of passionate fans, and forming lasting bonds with my teammates. There’s also the academic side of things. Duke has one of the best academic reputations in the country, and I want to take full advantage of that. I’m excited to challenge myself in both basketball and academics. But beyond all that, I think it’s the opportunity to be part of something bigger than myself—the legacy of Duke basketball, the brotherhood of the team, and the chance to make an impact.
Interviewer: That’s an incredible mindset, Cooper. It’s clear that you’re all in on not only making an impact on the court but also off it. Finally, what would you say to the Duke fans who are eagerly anticipating your arrival in Durham?
Cooper Flagg: To the Duke fans, I just want to say thank you for the support and excitement! I’m beyond excited to be joining such a passionate fanbase, and I can’t wait to get to work. You can expect me to give it my all every single day, both on and off the court. I’m coming to Duke to help build something special, and I can’t wait to represent the Blue Devils.
