Nicholas Heng named SEC Player of the Week

AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn redshirt sophomore Nicholas Heng has been tabbed SEC Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday. Heng picked up the honor after earning three singles wins and one doubles victory over the weekend including the match clinching singles victory against Georgia.

On Friday, Heng and doubles partner Thomas Kennedy picked up a crucial break late in the match that led to a 6-2 win that clinched the doubles point for Auburn. In singles, the first set between Heng and Callum Markowitz of Vanderbilt remained tight throughout.

Leading the set 6-5, Heng trailed Markowitz in a return game 15-40 but came back to win the game and the set. Heng then cruised through the second set to win 7-5, 6-0 to give Auburn a 3-1 advantage in the match.

On Sunday, Georgia’s Gabriele Vulpitta defeated Heng in the first set before Heng dominated the second set 6-1. With the final set tied at two, the Auburn redshirt sophomore earned two breaks and held to 15 in the final game to win the match 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 and clinch the team win for the Tigers.

In singles against Tennessee State later on Sunday evening, Heng won his second singles match of the day over Nicholas Adamec 6-1, 6-1 for his 15th overall singles win of the season and eighth dual match victory.

The Auburn redshirt sophomore is now the second Tigers to earn honors from the SEC this season, joining Alex Frusina who was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Feb. 5.

Heng and the Tigers will be back in action on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. against No. 15 Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.
