Paul Skenes, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ ace pitcher and former LSU standout, is making a special return to Omaha this week—not to take the mound, but to cheer on his alma mater as they compete in the 2025 Men’s College World Series. His presence in the stands is a testament to the deep bond he shares with LSU baseball and the enduring legacy he left on the program.

Skenes’ journey to Omaha began in 2023 when he transferred from the Air Force Academy to LSU. In his lone season with the Tigers, he delivered a historic performance, leading LSU to its seventh national championship. His dominance on the mound was unparalleled—posting a 1.69 ERA, 12-2 record, and 209 strikeouts, setting a new LSU single-season strikeout record. His efforts earned him the Dick Howser Trophy as the nation’s top player and the Most Outstanding Player award at the College World Series .

Beyond his statistics, Skenes’ leadership and presence were pivotal in LSU’s success. His ability to perform under pressure, including a crucial 8.0-inning, 2-hit shutout against Wake Forest in the CWS, showcased his poise and skill . After being selected first overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2023 MLB Draft, Skenes quickly transitioned to professional baseball. As of June 2025, he boasts a 15–9 record with a 1.89 ERA and 267 strikeouts, continuing to build on his promising career
