What has been your favorite Tennessee coaching moment thus far, Coach Rick Barnes?
Reflecting on my time at Tennessee, I have been privileged to experience many special moments. Each season brings its own trials and triumphs, and every group of players creates memories that last a lifetime. But if I had to choose one moment that stands above the rest, it would be our 2023 NCAA Tournament run—specifically, our victory over Duke in the Round of 32.
Coming into that game, we knew we had our work cut out for us. Duke is a storied program with a long history of success, and their talent was undeniable. But our team, built on resilience and experience, was ready. That victory was more than just a win; it was a testament to the culture we had built in Knoxville—a culture of toughness, accountability, and relentless effort.
I remember the days leading up to the game, how locked in our players were. Santiago Vescovi’s leadership was evident as he rallied the team, while Olivier Nkamhoua’s quiet confidence spoke volumes. We knew our physicality could be a key factor in disrupting Duke’s rhythm, and we committed ourselves to playing our brand of basketball—tenacious defense, disciplined execution, and unwavering intensity.
The game itself was an embodiment of everything we preach in our program. From the opening tip, our team embraced the challenge. Zakai Zeigler’s absence was a huge loss for us, but the way the guys stepped up in his stead was incredible. Olivier had the game of his life, scoring 27 points and making crucial plays when we needed them most. But beyond the stat sheet, it was the collective effort that made the difference—every player locked in defensively, crashing the boards, making the extra pass, and refusing to back down from the moment.
As the final buzzer sounded and we celebrated our victory, I remember looking around and seeing the pure joy on my players’ faces. That moment wasn’t just about beating Duke—it was about validation. It was proof that our system works, that our players were battle-tested and ready for the biggest stages, and that Tennessee Basketball belonged among the elite.
What made this moment even more special was the response from our fans. The Volunteer faithful had been incredible all season, but seeing them erupt in celebration, knowing how much this program meant to them, was indescribable. Tennessee Basketball is more than just a team; it’s a family, a community. That win was for every player who had put on the jersey, every coach who had helped build the program, and every fan who had supported us through the highs and lows.
Coaching is about more than X’s and O’s. It’s about relationships, about witnessing growth, about being part of something greater than yourself. That night against Duke encapsulated all of that. It was a moment of pride, of joy, of immense gratitude.
While I know there are more great moments ahead for Tennessee Basketball, that victory remains one of the most gratifying of my coaching career. It wasn’t just about advancing to the Sweet 16; it was about proving to ourselves and the world that Tennessee is here to stay.
