National media outlet names the biggest question facing the Tennessee Vols during spring football practice

When it comes to the Tennessee Vols, On3 thinks the biggest question facing the program during spring practice is whether the team has enough wide receiver depth.

From On3: Is this wide receiver room deep enough for the Volunteers? Tennessee suffered attrition at the wide receiver position this winter, losing Nate Spillman, Nathan Leacock, Squirrel White, Chas Nimrod and Kaleb Webb to the portal. They did survive a last-minute scare from Mike Matthews, holding onto the Five-Star Plus+ wide receiver recruit. Matthews has the chance to be Tennessee’s No. 1 receiver this fall. The Volunteers didn’t add a top-end wide receiver in the portal, but bring in Alabama’s Amari Jefferson along with four-star recruits Travis Smith and Radarious Jackson.

This is definitely a legitimate question that Tennessee has to answer this spring.

Tennessee’s wide receiver room has plenty of talent, but that talent is mostly unproven.

The Volunteers need Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley to be game-changers in 2025. Matthews and Staley saw limited action as true freshmen last season, but they’ll be counted on to play in key roles for Tennessee this fall.

Alabama transfer Amari Jefferson, who will be a redshirt freshman in 2025, along with true freshman wide receiver Travis Smith, a four-star recruit in the 2025 recruiting class, will also have opportunities to earn key roles in the offense.

Rising redshirt junior Chris Brazzell is Tennessee’s lone returning starting wide receiver.
