Arne Slot has reiterated that Liverpool remain locked in contract talks with all three of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold. And the Reds boss is unconcerned about the prospect of the trio speaking to other clubs from January 1 about free transfers next summer.

Vice-captain Alexander-Arnold, 19-goal top scorer Salah and club skipper Van Dijk are all free agents at the end of the current campaign and they can legally speak to teams outside of England about moving for nothing at the end of their deals from New Year’s Day.

The opportunity for the players’ representatives to field proposals from the giants of European football will be upon Liverpool from next Wednesday.

But Slot is not troubled about the influential trio entering into talks with other clubs, insisting he is happy as long as their performance levels continue to remain high for a team who are now unbeaten in 22 games.

“Keep asking, that’s your job, but you’re probably not going to get an answer from me. It’s clear that from 1 January, maybe for you guys (media), things change a lot but they are in constant talks with the club and let’s wait and see what happens. As long as they keep performing like this, the head coach is happy.”

On captain Van Dijk, whose club-record £75m capture from Southampton was confirmed seven years ago this week, Slot added: “It is difficult to judge [if he’s at his best now] because I wasn’t here when Virgil was close to winning the Ballon d’Or, for example (2019).
