Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri will be sidelined for a few weeks due to a muscle injury. The setback comes shortly after the young midfielder scored in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brighton. Nwaneri had been expected to play a bigger role following Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury, which has ruled him out until March.
Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg against Newcastle, Arteta said, “Unfortunately, he has picked up an injury and will be out for a few weeks.” This means Nwaneri could miss key fixtures, including an FA Cup clash with Manchester United, the north London derby on January 15, and further games against Aston Villa, Dinamo Zagreb, Wolves, and Girona.
On a more positive note, Arteta hinted that Kai Havertz might be available for the Newcastle game, saying, “Hopefully, but I don’t want to say too much.” Arsenal’s injury troubles have fueled speculation about a January transfer move for a striker, with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak reportedly a target. Arteta acknowledged Isak’s quality, stating, “He’s a top player in great form, scoring goals. We’ll try to minimize his impact.”
Meanwhile, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has brushed off criticism of his team’s physical approach as they climb to fifth in the Premier League following five straight wins. Asked about their reputation for “ruffling feathers,” Howe said, “We’re here to compete, not to be popular. It’s about focusing on our performance and goals, not outside perceptions.”
